Chhatrapati Shivaji
The founder of the Maratha Empire in Western India in 1674, Shivaji Bhonsle, also known as Chhatrapati Shivaji Raje Bhonsle, is regarded as one of the great heroes in India. Chhatrapati means "Chief, head or king of kshatriyas", a title bestowed upon him on 6th June 1674.

Shivaji was an able administrator, and to this day is remembered as a just and welfare-minded king.He believed that the state belonged to the people and hence encouraged people from all socio-economic groups to take part in political happenings.



One of the pioneers of commando actions, he established a government that included modern concepts such as cabinet, foreign affairs and internal intelligence. He skillfully used guerilla tactics, which were perfectly suited to the rugged mountains and valleys of the region.

He won many battles, and constructed a chain of approximately 300 forts running over a thousand kilometers across the Western Ghats.
